What Antiracism Is
This is in response to all those who decide to quit the journey of antiracism when a black person tells them to do the work themselves.
Consider this analogy.
Let’s say you decide to become a doctor. You get an undergraduate degree then you need to pass the MCAT. After that, you apply for medical school then you complete some more training. Then you have licensing exams. You get into residency. Then more licensing. Finish residency, more certifications and more licenses and then you apply for a job.
After you get the job, the work STILL isn’t done, you STILL have to sharpen your skills so you can save lives. You STILL have to stay vigilant so you can save lives. You take an oath to do the job! At any point in the journey, if you quit, you don’t become a doctor.
Along the way, you’re surely met with pit stops. Maybe you fail the MCAT or you don’t get into the residency or you don’t get the certificate you want. Does that stop you from doing the work if you want to become a doctor? No.
Maybe you have a patient who you don’t like or a patient who doesn’t like you. Does that stop you from doing the work? No.
At least it shouldn’t. You commit to constantly learning, adjusting and putting in the hours. So if you tell me you want to become an antiracist, why do you need to rely on someone else to help you become something that you should already want to be?
Obstacles don’t deter people from becoming who they want to be. They reveal who you already are.
Just saying. 🤷🏾♂️ #Dothework #LetsTalkBias #BlackLivesMatter #Beanantiracist
